Today I heard someone say, “MIT hasn’t had student deaths in several years but with the first one back in September, maybe that put the thought in people’s head.  Maybe people began to think it’s easier to end their life.  After the death today, I wonder if anyone is contemplating it now.”

I wanted to say in reply, “I have and I do.  But you got it wrong, the suicides don’t make anything easier - in fact it makes things harder because you realize how much hurt and pain you can inflict on the people who love you.  But when you’re so low you don’t know where to go, these suicides certainly give one that extra push of foolish courage to go there.”

But I stayed quiet, smiled, and kept walking.  What they don’t know won’t hurt them. 

Reach out to the people you love.  Don’t let them slip away from you.  You shouldn’t say I love you unless you mean it but when you do, say it a lot because people forget.
